An association governed by the French 1 July 1901 law, DFCI Aquitaine is administered by a Board of Directors that is elected by the Shareholders' Assembly for a 3-year term. The Board includes 11 members chosen from the directors of the departmental DFCIs, with 3 seats allotted per union. The Syndicat des Sylviculteurs du Sud Ouest (SSSO, Southwest silviculturist union) has 2 seats.
The Board of Directors elects a 4- to 6-person executive committee from its existing members.
Public establishments under prefectural supervision, the 4 departmental DFCIs, as well as the 241 Associations Syndicales Autorisées (ASAs, owners' associations) present in one or more communes, are under the jurisdiction of the French 21 June 1865 law, amended by the 1 July 2004 order. The Associations Syndicales Autorisées have been mandatory in the Landes de Gascogne region since the 28 April 1945 order.
A volunteer chairman elected by the owners leads each ASA. These associations are run and managed by 6 to 12 volunteer silviculturists who make up the executive committee.
The DFCI is active thanks to contributions made by silviculturists and to subsidies it receives from the European Union, the French government and local authorities.
All silviculturists in the Landes de Gascogne forest help support the DFCI by paying a contribution of €2.3/ha/year that makes it possible to finance necessary development work.
