The Landes de Gascogne forest, which stretches out over a surface area of approximately 1,000,000 ha, forms a uniform triangle lining the Gironde, Landes and Lot et Garonne départements. A part of the Dordogne region complements this massif with nearly 250,000 ha of forest. It represents Europe's largest cultivated forest with a 74% afforestation rate.
It is a forest made primarily of Maritime pines, particularly flammable softwood trees.
Thanks to a regular silvicultural system, this forest is sustainably managed, out of concern for protecting the environment. The Landes de Gascogne forest also carries significant economic weight in Aquitaine; the wood industry, with some 28,000 direct employees, generates a turnover of 2.5 billion euros.
